Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan and MLA David Swann say the Q2 Fiscal Update has Alberta on the edge of a financial cliff

Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan and MLA David Swann declare the Q2 Fiscal Update has Alberta on the edge of a financial cliff that should concern all Albertans.

Khan stated, “We are facing a precarious future. Spending is continuing to increase and GDP growth is shrinking. Both investment income and corporate income tax income are lower. Non-renewable resource revenue and revenue from personal income tax are both up, for now. The deficit is lower, but it’s still a whopping $7.5 billion.”

Swann stated, “The government continues to draw money from the Heritage Trust Fund to artificially reduce the deficit. They have pulled out over $4.4 billion in the past 3 years. That is like pulling money out of your RRSP to pay down your credit cards. It makes no sense. It is robbing future generations of Albertans just to deal with a current financial problem.”

Khan added, “Oil continues its roller-coaster run, taking Albertans on a yet another stomach-churning ride. The Western Canada Select (WCS) oil price differential will be the key. The Government is projecting the WCS differential average for the year at just below $30/barrel. That is marginally better than the almost $50 spread that has been punishing all Albertans for the past month. But it could get worse in the months to come.

Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan says AISH and Income Supports Bill 26 too little, too late for vulnerable Albertans

Alberta Liberal Leader Dave Khan issues the following release on the passing of Bill 26: An Act to Combat Poverty and Fight for Albertans with Disabilities.

Khan stated, “This legislation is too little, too late from the NDP Government. It is one more example of how they’re failing Albertans on social programs.

“This Government should have committed to increasing AISH and other income supports. It should have indexed them to inflation three-and-a-half years ago when they were first elected. Instead, the NDP let Alberta’s most vulnerable languish—until just before an election—while they piled on record levels of debt.

“The flat rate increases to these programs are too low. Albertans relying on AISH have not received an increase since 2012. The increases provided today do not even account for inflation over the last 6 years.

“AISH recipients will be poorer under this NDP legislation than they were under the PC Government 6 years ago. This is not the progressive Government that Albertans voted for.

“These income support increases should have at least covered the rise in the cost of living.”

If AISH benefits were increased relative to inflation, a single person would have received monthly payments of $1,743 instead of $1,685. That extra $58 a month can have an enormous impact on the life of someone on income supplements.

AISH recipients receiving payments from the Canada Child Benefit (CCB) program will see a few dollars more this year because the annual CCB increases will be clawed back from their AISH payments.

Khan continued, “I’m also concerned about the clawbacks on AISH payments based on federal income supports. The NDP Government should have used this legislation to explore reducing or eliminating clawbacks based on federal income support payments programs.”

Alberta Liberals will continue to fight for quality of life for all Albertans.
