Statement on UCP Leadership Election

Alberta Liberal Party Interim Leader John Roggeveen issues the following statement in response to Danielle Smith’s election as UCP Leader:

“I congratulate Danielle Smith on her victory. I sincerely hope as Premier she is able to act in the best interests of all Albertans. However, I have grave concerns about her agenda.

“Smith’s proposed Alberta Sovereignty Act is profoundly dangerous. This unconstitutional legislation will drive away investment by creating uncertainty and undermining rule of law in Alberta. We simply cannot afford economically reckless populism like this at such a critical juncture.

“Equally concerning are Smith’s comments on healthcare. Smith has courted the anti-vax movement and suggested that she would fire the boards of both Alberta Health Services and the College of Physicians and Surgeons. These kinds of ideas are dangerous and threaten to throw our healthcare system into chaos while it is already on the verge of collapse.

“Alberta needs thoughtful leadership, not reckless and radical populism. The Alberta Liberals will offer a moderate alternative to Smith’s haphazard agenda. We are focused on building a resilient and prosperous economy, a socially inclusive society, and effective public services. All Albertans who share that focus are welcome in our party.”
