Friday Focus: Divided We Fall

While most leaders across Canada stood together this week against incoming US President Trump’s threats to impose crippling tariffs, our Premier Smith chose to go it alone. Focused only on preserving Alberta’s oil and gas  industry, she has ignored other vital sectors of Alberta’s economy, notably agriculture and forestry, not to mention other Canadians’ interests.

When Canada faces challenges like these, we need to stand together as a nation. By refusing to support a united response, Premier Smith has weakened Canada’s position and undermined the teamwork we need to succeed. She is dividing our country while blaming others for it.

As usual, Danielle Smith is more interested in grandstanding for a segment of the local audience, regardless of how it hurts the rest of our province and our country.

I don’t believe counter tariffs are the solution to Trump’s threats. Those threats will harm the USA’s economy too and Americans will realize that soon enough. But we need a coordinated Canadian plan to counteract the challenges from our southern neighbour. We have long standing friendly relations with the USA we don’t want to sour. But we also need to be resolute.

Canada’s strength comes from unity. When we work together, we can achieve great things for Alberta, our country and our economy, like the federal government’s investment in the TMX pipeline. But that progress depends on leaders who are prepared to collaborate,, not just pursue their own priorities.

The Alberta Liberal Party believes we can support Alberta’s industries while staying committed to Canada’s national interests. It’s time for leadership that works with others, not against them.

Let’s keep building a better Alberta, an Alberta that’s strong, united, and part of a thriving Canada.

Thank you for standing with us.
