Friday Focus: Alberta's Children Deserve Better

The latest Alberta Child Poverty Report reveals a stark reality: over 160,000 children in our province—one in six—are living in poverty. This isn't just a statistic; it's children going to bed hungry, missing out on opportunities, and being denied the bright futures they deserve.

The report shows that temporary pandemic supports briefly reduced child poverty, but now, as those programs have ended, the numbers have climbed back to pre-pandemic levels. For these children, "normal" means struggling for basic necessities, and that's not acceptable.

We believe in action, not excuses. The Alberta Liberal Party is committed to bold, practical solutions that make a difference:

  • A National School Food Program: We fully support the federal Liberal commitment to a National School Food Program, which would provide nutritious meals to 400,000 children annually. Every child deserves the chance to learn and grow without the distraction of hunger.

  • Affordable Child Care: We back the federal initiative to expand $10-a-day child care, giving Alberta families the support they need to enable parents to re-enter the workforce.

  • Fairness for All Families: We will implement policies to address systemic barriers faced by Indigenous, racialized, and marginalized families and institute policies to support families in crisis. This is about more than just helping struggling families—it's about building a better future for Alberta. By investing in children today and embracing innovative, sustainable economic policies, we can create a province where everyone has a fair chance to succeed.

The UCP has neglected Alberta’s families. We will not.

Join us in demanding better for Alberta's children and if you can, donate a few dollars as well.

A $200 donation to us means the government will give you up to $150 back as a credit on your taxes in April. A small cost to you, but a big help to us. Any amount helps.
