The Women’s Policy Workshop will discuss and create resolutions concerning the most recent research work by Canadian Policy Alternatives which names Edmonton as the Worst City in Canada for Women to Live. The study compared 20 of Canada’s largest cities in 5 categories: Security, Economy, Education, Health and Leadership. Although the focus will be on Edmonton, information about conditions for women in the rest of Alberta and Canada will also be available. Resolutions will be created on the 3 most concerning areas: 1. Security: Edmonton has higher than average rates of intimate partner violence reported to the police. Over 4000 incidents of sexual and domestic violence are reported annually in Edmonton. Unreported rates are higher. National: Statistics Canada report finds that the rate of violent crime against women is highest between the ages of 15 and 24. 2. Economy: Edmonton has the largest gap in employment incomes, with women earning nearly $21,000 less per year than their male peers (or 60% of male wages) and 10% of the population living below the Low Income Measure. National - 1 in 7 (2.4 million) Canadian women is living in poverty. 3. Leadership: Edmonton falls in second to last place in the area of women’s political representation with one woman holding elected municipal office. The city performs slightly better in the area of women’s professional representation, with 29% of senior management positions held by women. National Representation - 25% of MP’s are Women. Not all is gloom for Edmonton Women who are more likely than men in Edmonton to hold high school, college or university degrees.
