Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan released the following statement on Bill 24, An Act to Support Gay-Straight Alliances:
“I find Jason Kenney’s position on GSAs deeply disturbing, and I am disappointed with this morning’s announcement that the United Conservative Party will oppose Bill 24.
“As a member of the gay community, I know first-hand how difficult it is for many people to come out to family and friends. LGBTQ2S+ youth must be allowed to make this decision for themselves.
“LGBTQ2S+ youth face higher rates of suicide and homelessness. Allowing youth to be outed before they are ready to come out risks exacerbating these issues. Kenney’s position is one that unequivocally puts youth at risk of physical and mental harm.
“Both the UCP and NDP are using this issue to try and score political points and as a dog-whistle to their base. They are putting politics ahead of protecting children.
“My support for this bill is absolute, and I call on UCP caucus members to do the right thing for student safety by voting in favour of this bill.”
