Alberta Liberal Leader David Swann made this statement on the murder of Taliyah Leigh Marsman, her mother, Sara Baillie, and the attack in Nice:
“In times like these words are never enough. The horrific attack in Nice and the horrific murder of Taliyah and her mother are tragedies of an indescribable nature. I cannot imagine the extent of their families’ pain. My thoughts and prayers are with them as, I know, are all Albertans’.
“It would be easy to fall into despair, with tragedy far away and right here at home combining to show the very worst in human nature. It would also be easy to succumb to anger and hate, to begin to fear and distrust our neighbours, to lash out at the nearest targets – but this would only create further tragedy as our communities divide and splinter.
“As Albertans come together to mourn for Taliyah, her mother, Sara, and the victims in France we are reminded that, in the face of tragedy, near or far, it is our compassion and our understanding that brings healing.”
