CALGARY, AB (NOVEMBER 20, 2017): Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan released the following statement to commemorate Transgender Day of Remembrance:
“Today we mourn those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. Although we have made progress towards awareness and acceptance of trans peoples, today reminds us that they are still a horrifyingly vulnerable part of our society.
“Every day, transgender Albertans face stigma and discrimination that far too often leads to outright violence. As we lament the victims of that violence, we commit to building a society that fundamentally recognizes the needs of transgender peoples and proudly includes them in our communities.
“Improving health supports for transgender youth, as I have called for previously, is an important step towards that society. However, at its core is the acknowledgment that all people deserve a safe space to be themselves, free of fear and discrimination. This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we recognize that right, and pledge to work towards ensuring it for transgender Albertans.”
