Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan issues Statement on Transgender Day of Remembrance
Calgary, AB - Nov. 20, 2019: Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan issues the following statement in recognition of Transgender Day of Remembrance:
Khan stated, “Transgender Day of Remembrance is an important and solemn time. Today, we mourn those who have lost their lives due to anti-transgender bigotry and violence. Although we have made progress towards awareness and acceptance of trans peoples, today reminds us that they are still horrifyingly vulnerable members of our society.
“Every day, transgender Albertans face stigma and discrimination that far too often leads to outright violence. As we lament the victims of that violence, we commit to building a society that fundamentally recognizes the needs of transgender peoples and proudly includes them in our communities.
“Improving health supports for all transgender Albertans with initiatives like easier access to hormone replacement therapy and properly funding transgender youth clinics like the Metta Clinic, as I have called for previously, is an important step towards that society. However, at its core is the acknowledgement that all people have a right a safe space to be themselves, free of fear and discrimination.
“This Transgender Day of Remembrance, we recognize that right, pledge to fight to end hateful transphobia and violence against our fellow transgender friends and family, and work towards ensuring it for all transgender Albertans.”
