Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan responds to Calgary Mayor Naheed Nenshi’s Op-Ed in the Calgary Herald on important city issues.
Khan stated, “Mayor Nenshi’s comments were unfair, inaccurate and disappointing. He dismisses all parties’ proposals as inadequate. We suggest he read the Alberta Liberal Party Policy Platform released earlier this week. We made important commitments on issues.
The Mayor is right that the UCP and NDP have waffled on city issues or remained silent. Alberta Liberals did neither. We are walking the Talk.
The Mayor’s Op-Ed is full of inaccuracies, misstatements and outright wrong facts. He suggested that no party has a fair distribution plan for cannabis tax revenue nor is Extended Producer Responsibility on any party’s radar. Alberta Liberals have clear policies in these areas. Our cannabis policy committed to an equitable cannabis revenue-sharing model. We also committed to Extended Producer Responsibility in our platform. Furthermore the Alberta Liberals pushed the NDP to pursue it in the Legislature.
“Alberta Liberals Policy Platform also pledged to recognize municipalities as an order of Government. We will grant them new revenue generating powers and double the funding for affordable housing. We will implement these policies based on consultation and collaboration with cities.
“Alberta Liberals have pledged many bold policies on key municipalities. We have made cities a priority this election. We will make life better for Albertans.”
