Alberta Liberal Party Leader David Khan thanks Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin for her service to Canada and her support for the rights of Indigenous people.
Calgary, AB (June 13th, 2017)
On Monday, Chief Justice Beverley McLachlin announced that she will be retiring from the Supreme Court of Canada, effective December 15th, 2017. Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan offered his thanks, stating, “Chief Justice McLachlin will certainly go down in history as one of Canada’s greatest jurists. She is a passionate, intelligent and articulate defender of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and a skillful consensus builder who presided over an extraordinary number of unanimous decisions. She is the first female and the longest-serving Chief Justice in Canadian history. She is also proudly from Pincher Creek, and a graduate of the University of Alberta. For these traits, and others, I’d like to sincerely thank her for her service on behalf of the Alberta Liberal Party and all Albertans.”
David Khan added, “I have great respect for Chief Justice McLachlin and her commitment to Indigenous rights, including her willingness to use the term ‘cultural genocide’ to describe the injustices faced by Indigenous peoples. Her decisions on Indigenous issues laid the groundwork for many of my professional endeavours and successes as an Indigenous rights lawyer.”
