Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan issued the following statement in response to the violent incidents this past weekend in Charlottesville, Virginia:
“I was horrified and disgusted by the racist rhetoric and the senseless violence that occurred in Charlottesville this weekend.
“Events like these serve as chilling reminders of the preciousness of human life, the fragility of social progress, and the need to oppose racism, bigotry, and intolerance whenever and wherever it surfaces.
“Alberta is not immune to this kind of hatred. This year, we witnessed incidents of hate directed toward Syrian refugees in Red Deer, racist rallies in Calgary, as well as the targeting of pride symbols throughout the province.
“We must aspire to be a society that upholds our Charter of Rights and Freedoms, a province of freedom and equality which views diversity as a strength and strives to protect the rights of ethnic, religious and sexual minorities – as well as those of all Albertans.
“As Liberal Leader, I will commit to doing all I can to promote a more just society, including reiterating my call for a formal review of the Alberta Human Rights Act, to ensure the rights of all Albertans are preserved.”
