CALGARY, AB (NOVEMBER 21, 2017): Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan released the following statement to mark Holodomor Remembrance Day:
“Today, Alberta officially recognizes the forced famine and genocide of Ukrainians by the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics under Joseph Stalin.
“Canada is home to one of the world’s largest Ukrainian populations, many of whom settled in our province, and whose presence is seen and felt in the landscape, arts, and cuisine.
“The strong connection Alberta has with Ukraine and people of Ukrainian heritage makes this a very personal tragedy for many of our citizens who still grieve the loss of their loved ones.
“Holodomor Remembrance Day means much more than an historical observance. It is a sacred time to honour the memory of family and friends who perished in unimaginable suffering during those terrible years.
“Alberta Liberals stand in solidarity with Ukrainian Canadians in remembrance of those who suffered, in condemnation of these heinous crimes against humanity, and in determination to never allow such horrors to ever occur again.”
