Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan has released the following statement on today’s Transmountain Pipeline Expansion meeting in Ottawa between the Prime Minister and the Premiers of Alberta and B.C.:
“I am disappointed there has been no positive outcome after the TransMountain Pipeline meeting that was long on political grandstanding and short on any detailed practical solution.
“But now is not the time for the Alberta NDP Government to take drastic action that could harm Albertans and the whole province.
“Reducing oil production across the board to harm B.C. will only hurt our economy, reduce provincial revenue and threaten jobs, without advancing the approval of the pipeline project. This is divisive & counterproductive —cutting off our nose to spite our face.
“Rushing into billions of dollars of public investment in the pipeline is reckless without a detailed plan on how the project can move forward and benefit Albertans.
Alberta Liberal Leader David Khan has released the following statement on using taxpayers’ dollars to finance the Kinder Morgan Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion:
"We are warning Premier Notley not to tap the Heritage Fund for $8 billion to purchase the Pipeline as she has said her government could do.
This would be akin to using your child’s college fund to pay for a big new truck.
The Heritage Fund is sacrosanct to Albertans and was created to safeguard our financial future.
At the very least Albertans should be consulted by this NDP Government before even considering such a significant decision.
The NDP Government should also cancel misguided “diversification” proposals, such as the $1 Billion in corporate welfare they have proposed for partial upgraders, and instead use that money for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project, if a form of public financing is absolutely necessary.
We are also demanding the Federal Government make an investment in this project to ensure they have skin in the game and mitigate Alberta’s financial risk.
l support conditional public debt financing of this infrastructure project because it is in the national interest and will broadly benefit not only Canada’s energy industry, but all Albertans.
However, Alberta should not be simply writing a blank cheque to Kinder Morgan for the Trans Mountain Pipeline Expansion project.
Our support is also contingent on the NDP Government committing to full-cost accounting reports annually on Alberta’s oil sands region, including reclamation liabilities and greenhouse gas emissions.
This is an issue of national importance. This is a national infrastructure project that will create jobs for Albertans and Canadians. But we must be careful to ensure any public investment is the best possible deal for all Albertans, now and in the future."
Alberta Liberal MLA David Swann has released the following statement on Yom HaShoah:
I am encouraging all Albertans to take time for somber reflection on Yom HaShoah, Holocaust Remembrance Day.
On this day we remember the evil committed by Adolf Hitler and the Nazis that saw six million Jews brutally murdered solely because of their faith. It is a day for us to reflect and mourn on a horrific and shameful chapter in human history.
As the Holocaust fades into the past, we must remain vigilant against hatred in all its forms. We must be alert and watchful against the systemic violence, persecution, and racism that sadly still threaten our society today.
There were many during the Holocaust who stood up to persecution and acted to save the lives of their neighbours shielding them from this murderous evil. We must honour those heroic efforts and be mindful of their courage so that we continue to be steadfast and determined to ensure the horrors of the Holocaust never happen again.
