My name is Pete Helfrich and I have been a Paramedic for 25years. I have been going into the homes of Calgarians and helping people through a variety of medical crises since 1989. For 25 years I have been advocating for Albertans struggling to navigate through a health care system fraught with inefficiency and confusion.
I became active in provincial politics in 2008 when the Alberta government made the decision to place Emergency Medical Services under provincial control. Since 2010 I have been active as a member of the Alberta Liberal Party, and have worked very closely with Dr. Swann and the Liberal Caucus on a number of issues effecting Albertans.
My personal experiences as a Paramedic, and my experiences with Dr. Swann, have taught me that POLITICS IS PERSONAL.
What Alberta's MLA's decide has a direct effect on your life: from taxes to Cancer Centres, from day care to logging practices and from flood control to classroom size; ALL DECIDED BY MLA's.
For 25years I had a direct effect on people's lives as a Paramedic. I want to continue to serve Albertans as an MLA, I want to be in government.
I want to be an MLA because I believe that my life's experiences have prepared me for this opportunity and I believe that the VALUES that guide the Liberal party are the values that will make Alberta great again.
Don Braid, reporter for the Calgary Herald states "David Swann, leader of the Alberta Liberals once again, has always had an admirable moral force about him. It comes from his strange compulsion to tell the truth." I believe that Dr. Swann's personal sense of honesty and integrity are exactly what Albertan's are looking for in their MLA's.
I believe that Albertans have been left behind and that the Alberta Advantage has been lost. But with the Values that guide Liberals and with the mentorship of MLA's, Laurie Blakeman and Dr. Swann, I, and all Liberals will hold this government accountable and move Alberta toward a bright and beautiful future.
