Alberta Liberal Party - Edmonton Rutherford MLA Candidate
Michael was born, raised, and proudly continues to live in Edmonton.
He is grateful to his parents who came to this bountiful and beautiful province. Michael loves Alberta, but its government has been mired in its inability to invest responsibly in its people and its future.
"I am a proud Liberal"
Alberta Liberal MLAs have long been the strongest voices of change and accountability for this province, successfully introducing and influencing positive progressive legislation. It is Michael's greatest professional aspiration to be an Alberta Liberal MLA, to learn and contribute to the future of a party that founded and has given so much to Alberta: effectively, honourably, and humbly.
Michael has earned a living as a field marketing professional for the last 15 years, traveling and learning about communities all over Alberta promoting a variety of products, from being licensed in insurance and investment products, to currently with a high profile entertainment company - recently earning a National Award of Excellence. Field representatives are hard working front line businessman, self-motivated, and always available at any time or day to listen and address the concerns of clients. It is Michael's utmost desire to be able to always be available to listen, serve , and better the lives of the constituents of Edmonton Rutherford, and furthermore all Alberta as a young and completely dedicated and focused Liberal MLA that would devote himself completely to the great responsibly a MLA merits.
Michael's family has worked tirelessly as front line nurses and nursing aides for Alberta Health. He has seen their challenges and is inspired by their incredible work ethic and commitment to patient care. Michael himself began as a volunteer and intern for Alberta Healthcare Services, and continued to work in Hospital Materials Management as he pursued volunteer and education opportunities.
Michael has donated or volunteered locally to Canadian Blood Services, the Mustard Seed, the Hope Mission, the Cerebral Palsy Association, the Bissell Centre, the Stollery, local Chinese Carnivals, and community playground development. In addition, he has fundraised for his parents native Philippines, supporting the infrastructure of orphanages, monasteries, and offering typhoon relief. He has been a volunteer at his local church for a dozen years as a reader and eucharistic minister, also providing communion at long term care homes.
Michael graduated from the University of Alberta with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science. He has long been engaged politically; from lobbying for community cross walks in primary school to debating at the New York Model United Nations in post secondary. He has and continues to support and volunteer for political figures that have strong Liberal values emphasizing the dignity and respect of all members of our community, that push urban development, and are truly caring and trustworthy. It is these values that make him proud to be a Liberal, and values that he aspires to live everyday representing.
Michael continued with Open Studies dedicating himself to academics and learning. His areas of expertise include political economy, development, and globalization. It was Michael's balanced approach to education that helps define him as a centrist balanced Liberal believing in the progressive importance of social and public responsibility but also fiscal responsibility and free enterprise.
However, like very much a health care system that is not serving the public responsibly, our education system is failing us. As a student at the University of Alberta for a decade, Michael saw firsthand whole departments reduced to a single office or even a single phone. Education is the key to diversifying the economy, to empower young Albertans that have the lowest post secondary participation in the country. Michael hopes to start a family of his own in a few years, but as many young couples in Alberta, they fear the state of a stretched education system that already has the largest class sizes in Canada.
"I love Alberta, but not the way it has been governed. I vow to fight for the liberty of our most vulnerable and to invest in education for our future. I am deeply grateful for your support."
