“I became more and more concerned with issues like health care and fiscal policy. So, for me, there was only one thing to do… join the Alberta Liberals and work to advance the Alberta Liberal mission and values.”

Jon Friel, Strathcona
A forensic psychologist who has worked extensively with youth, Jon Friel sees the need for public policy that serves the next generation and ensures their future prosperity and happiness.
He was born in Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan. From 1969 until retiring in 2001, Jon held a myriad of positions in both the federal and provincial corrections systems that dealt with both adult and juvenile offenders. He worked for seventeen years at the Edmonton Young Offenders Centre and now has a private psychology practice in Edmonton.
In the community, Jon is on the board of the Spirit Keeper Youth Society, a group that aims to help aboriginal youth out of the traps of gang activity and crime. He has been a board member of the Kinsmen and the John Howard Society and has been involved with Meals on Wheels and many community leagues. He is a past President of the Saskatchewan Criminology and Corrections Association. He is an experienced fundraiser for community projects and has coached extensively in minor football, including starting (and coaching) a team in Ardrossan, Alberta.
Jon is concerned about many things that affect his constituency and Alberta as a whole. He bought the first membership in the seniors action group ‘Seniors Now’ to express his concern with health care for seniors. He is critical of the Alberta Energy and Utilities Board and wants such bodies to make a sustainable environment a greater focus. He is also an advocate of both fiscal and educational policy that positively affect our childrens’ and grandchildrens’ futures.
Jon lives with his wife of thirty-eight years, Margaret, and they have two sons.
