Edith McPhedran, Lacombe-Ponoka

Edith is a dedicated community activist with a special interest in rural sustainability issues. She vows to protect the quality of life rural Albertans currently enjoy and wants to strengthen the fabric of rural communities so that they may continue to thrive far into the future.

Currently, Edith is the executive director of Rural Alberta Youth in Action. Her many past accomplishments include developing a provincial association of rural communities, facilitating the Alberta Rural Women’s Health Research Project, developing a regional Youth Volunteer program, and co-creating the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Awareness Campaign in her region. She has also been president of the Agricultural Society and chair of the Camrose & District Victim Services.

She has a Farm and Ranch Livestock Production diploma from Olds College, an Agribusiness diploma from Assiniboine Community College, a Community Economic Development certificate and post-secondary education in Social Work.

On top of rural sustainability, Edith has many of the same concerns shared by others in her region. She wants to act on water protection, seniors’’ care, affordable housing, government accountability, shortages in health care, and the rising cost of postsecondary education.

With many years of high-level involvement in grassroots community organizations, Edith has plenty of experience in decision making and consensus building to carry with her into the Legislature. Her passion for the province and dedication to her community are matched by few, and she hopes to harness this energy and enthusiasm towards solving the many problems facing Albertans.

Edith loves spending time with her family, which includes her husband, Brian, and her two daughters, Chelsey and Alexandra. She also enjoys boating, skiing (both water and downhill), scuba diving, horseback riding, gardening and planning community events.
