Calgary-Fort

Carole Oliver

“Everyday I walk, drive and work in the Calgary-Fort communities. As I chat with and listen to the residents of Calgary-Fort I consistently hear that they do not feel they have been well served. They want change.”

Carole is committed to making a meaningful contribution to the community, city and province where she has lived for close to 35 years.

While working as a banker in downtown Calgary during the mid 80’s, she witnessed the worsening state of Alberta’s economic engine.  The increasing poverty, the rising number of homeless alarmed her and she wanted to help society’s most vulnerable to prevent them from falling through the cracks.

After beginning her search for a new and more personally rewarding career she returned to school, worked evenings and along with her husband, Dave raised their three daughters.

As the Director of Residential Services for Salvation Army Addiction and Rehabilitation Services she was involved with advocacy and educational issues, and programming to address barriers to securing employment and affordable housing.

She took her first public office after the 2001 municipal election, when she was elected public school trustee to represent Wards 6 and 7.

Carole was elected to vice-chair of the Board of Trustees in 2002 by her fellow Board Members and served the one term before returning to work in social housing.

She is committed to social justice issues and continues to work toward ensuring that Alberta is a place where all Albertans can participate, work, live and enjoy the opportunities of a prosperous province.

“There is truly something wrong, when in a province of wealth and abundance, we have children going to school hungry, and families living well below the poverty level,” says the outspoken advocate for social change.
