“It’s all about our children. As a mother of three young children, I know we have to secure their prosperity now, and we need to protect our environment so we can be proud to pass it on to them.”

Laura Shutiak, Calgary-Fish Creek
Laura Shutiak knows how to listen. A former journalist, she sees children and families as the priority for our society. She intends to run a child-friendly campaign, to attract volunteers and engage voters.
Laura grew up and was educated in Calgary and Okotoks. She went on to study at the University of Calgary and received a BA in Journalism and Communications from the University of Regina (1992).
She is currently the editor of the Canadian Sporting Goods Association Info-Bulletin, a weekly trade publication. She worked at the Calgary Herald for nine years as a reporter, travel writer, feature writer and editor (1991-2000). She has done corporate communications work for the Calgary Board of Education and the Forzani Group.
In the community, Laura’s priorities are clear: children and their education. She has held numerous positions on the parent council of Ếcole Sam Livingston School, including Spirit Building and Fundraising Co-Chair, Secretary and Vice Chair. She is currently the school’s Calgary Association of Parents and School Councils representative, and is Secretary of CAPSC. She is former chair of the Franklin Children Centre Society, which operated a not-for-profit daycare in Calgary.
Her focus in government is education. She believes a strong education system is vital to any successful society. She is also concerned with environmental protection and the need for health and long term care options for our seniors. She believes many seniors who worked so hard to build our province are being left behind by the boom.
Laura is married with three young children. She spends a lot of time in Fish Creek Park with her family. She is an avid golfer and skier, and loves to read.
