Alberta Liberals Unveil Edmonton and Region Agenda
The Alberta Liberals outlined their key priorities today for an Edmonton and Region Agenda, which include making the city a world-leading centre for post-secondary education.
“Post-secondary education is our insurance for the future,” says Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft. “By investing in education, we’ll pave the way to long-term prosperity, and expand our workforce, create jobs and drive our economy. If we do it right, Alberta will have some of the top post-secondary institutions in the world.”
The Alberta Liberal Edmonton Agenda:
- Super-charge Edmonton’s post-secondary institutions, so they can be true, permanent world leaders. We will start by enabling the University of Alberta’s plan to boost numbers of faculty and graduate students.
- Work with municipalities and the River Valley Alliance to complete the Capital Region River Valley Park, stretching along the spectacular valley from Devon to Fort Saskatchewan.
- Strengthen the Edmonton region’s arts and culture sector through our comprehensive arts and culture policy, including tripling funding to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts and establishing an Alberta arts festival.
- Address the shortage of affordable housing and end homelessness.
- Invest in Edmonton’s LRT and public transportation system to fix traffic problems and take leadership on environmental issues.
- Help ensure that Edmontonians feel safe in their communities through putting more police officers on the streets, and revising the building code to better address fire safety.
“This city’s reputation as an economic, educational, and arts and culture hub is truly impressive,” says Taft. “That’s what Edmonton has to offer now. It’s a wonderful city – imagine what it has the potential to become. We can accomplish great things together if we get started now. It’s time.”
