Alberta Liberals Release Southern Alberta Agenda

Protecting Southern Alberta’s water, investing in post-secondary education and helping to build a new performing arts centre are among the top priorities on an Alberta Liberal agenda for Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta.

The Alberta Liberal priorities for Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta include:

Moving immediately to protect Southern Alberta’s water by measures including creating a specific watershed management plan for the Old Man River and South Saskatchewan river basins and completing an inventory of the region’s water supply.
  • Beginning construction on the new hospital in Medicine Hat and increasing the amount of hospital, long-term care and mental health beds to ensure that residents of Lethbridge, Medicine Hat and Southern Alberta have access to the highest quality of care.
  • Creating a permanent post-secondary education endowment fund to super-charge Alberta’s post-secondary institutions, including Lethbridge’s gem of a university, Medicine Hat College and Lethbridge College, part of our Funding Alberta’s Future plan.
  • Ensuring that seniors centres receive the funding they need to provide high quality programs that improve the well-being and quality of life of Alberta’s seniors.
  • Working with Lethbridge to support its plans for a new performing arts centre. This falls under the Alberta Liberal plan to strengthen the arts and culture sector, by establishing a $500 million endowment fund and tripling funding to the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.
  • Addressing overcrowding in Southern Alberta classrooms by building new schools.
  • “I know that people here sometimes wonder if this is the forgotten corner of Alberta, and feel as if Southern Alberta’s relationship with the provincial government is like a pipeline going out, and a garden hose coming back,” says Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft.

“The Alberta Liberals want to change that. We want to build a bridge between Southern Alberta and the province’s capital by providing greater support for the issues affecting this region. We want Southern Albertan residents to have their voice heard by their government.”
