Alberta Liberals Outline Top Items on Calgary Agenda

The Alberta Liberals are kicking off the first day of the provincial election campaign today with the release of their top agenda items for addressing issues important to Calgarians.

“The Alberta Liberals aren’t satisfied with random acts of government,” says Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft. “We don’t think voters, city councillors, students, or anyone else should have to wait for elections to get the services and funding they need. We want to work with Calgarians as partners to keep building on this amazing city. We want to build an agenda that will see this city flourish forever.”

The Alberta Liberal Calgary Agenda includes:

  • Re-balancing the royalty structure to protect jobs and the economy. In consultation with stakeholders, we will give conventional gas producers a break in tough market conditions, while maintaining the bottom line of a 20 per cent increase in the overall royalty take.
  • Taking the lead on watershed management to protect Calgary’s water supply, along with upstream forests and wetlands.
  • Fixing traffic problems by working with the city to build roads and increasing support for public transportation.
  • Implementing comprehensive strategies to end homelessness in Calgary and increase the supply of affordable housing.
  • Creating Mount Royal University and working with Calgary school boards to build schools in the communities that need them.
  • Ensuring Calgarians feel safe in their communities by increasing per capita funding to municipalities for more police officers.

“Calgarians have a reason to be extremely proud of their city,” says Taft. “Calgary is an impressive success story, from the business sector to the burgeoning cultural scene. But we can make it an even greater city, by ensuring the municipality is provided the long-term funding it needs to sustain and strengthen its services.”
