Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft Says “It’s Time”

Alberta Liberal Leader Kevin Taft promises an Alberta Liberal government will put money back in the pockets of Albertans by eliminating health-care premiums and providing help with other rising costs. Three hundred Alberta Liberals, including many of the candidates, greeted Taft with sustained applause when he spoke this evening on the University of Alberta campus.

Kicking off his party’s campaign ahead of the election call, Taft described a future scenario where, after four years of an Alberta Liberal government, Albertans will be enjoying a strong economy, an environment on its way to sustainability, improved education and health care, an improved quality of life and lower fees and utility costs.

“So what is this new Alberta like in 2012?” he asked. “First, the economy has never been as solid. By investing 30 per cent of our royalties, we’re finally on the road to permanent prosperity. We’ve pumped up the Heritage Fund and kept taxes low.

“Electrical deregulation is dead. Tuition is back under control. Dental coverage has increased and the Seniors’ Benefit is inflation proof. Maintenance loans are keeping seniors in their homes. And in case you forgot – health care premiums are gone.”

Health care premiums cost Alberta families about $1,000 each year.

Taft promised that an Alberta Liberal government will triple funding for the arts, build more schools without using P3s, and work with major cities to improve public safety by putting more officers on the street.

Also, housing will be more affordable, he said, and the health care system will get badly-needed attention.

He also said the Alberta Liberals will get serious on climate change.

“Albertans will have a choice on climate change policy. The Alberta Liberals present a firm plan to work with industry and all stakeholders to get on top of this urgent issue. It’s time to get started.”
